At the beginning of october we visited the Yucatan Peninsula( Yucatan). After the first night at the Riviera Maya, we took our rental car and drove to the next archaeological site, to Tulum. The mayan place is the only one, which lays directly on the coast. The architecture and the mystic feeling with the ocean as background makes it more than unique. We passed the lagoon of bacalar, while we were driving to Chetumal. Chetumal has been a small town so we just did sleep there. Next morning we visited Kohunlich. Driving over really tough terrain, you reach the mayan place of Konhunlich. The temple of the mask is pretty nice to see, as well as the surrounding jungle with a lot of exotic animals( a 3-4m long snake did welcome us). Next archeological place has been Xpujil, where you can find 3 impressive towers. There has been a terrible storm, so we’ve been more than wet… . After a warm shower in our accomodation for the night, we visited another 2 archeological places. Chicanna has been really small, but Becan was really veeery impressive. Becan, which is surrounded by a moat, has been the religious and political centre of the mayan world in this area. The great pyramid is more than fantastic to see and from the top you’ve a wonderful view over the green jungle. Becan is less visited than other mayan places, so you got the feeling you’ve been transfered to another world, in another time. Next day we drove to the biospheres reserve Calakmul. The mayan place, with the same name (Calakmul), has been once, together with Tikal in Guatemala, the most famous powerhouse.
You can find in Calakmul more than 6000 builidings, constructed on an area from about 30qkm. There is also the highest pyramid in mexico, which is the second highest pyramid of the whole mayan world(highest one in Tikal/Guatemala). An absolutely terrific view from the top, which rewards your courage to climb the pyramid. Apart from 2 different kinds of apes, we saw tortoises, tucans, snakes and quite big bird spiders. Very beautiful nature which is only tarnished by thousands of mosquitos. The tough way back to the main road, our next stop has been Chetumal.
The next day we did a short trip to the town. After we saw the main things we drove furter to Labná. Labná is placed on the Puuc-Route, which means all the mayan places along this route have the characteristic Puuc style. In Labná you can find the impressive “Gran Palacio” and the “Arco Triunfal”. Next mayan playe on our route has been Kabah. The Palace of the Masks, which is decorated with 260 Chaac masks, is very impressive too. After 2h visiting Kabah, we drove to our night accomodation. At the evening we visited the Light- and Sound show in Uxmal, which wasn’t that good(trabnslation in german/english has been terrible). Next day we saw Uxmal at daylight. The Pyramid of the Magican” is the most impressive building and everything is built around that building. The most powerful building is the Palace of the governor. The flair has been disturbed only by the many tourists, visiting Uxmal. Our next stop has been Merida, which is a nice city, combining mexican(maya) and spanish styles/architecture. The following day we visited the village Izamal and drive further to Chichén Itzá. In Izamal we explored the abbey, which is painted, like the whole village, in a yellow-white style. Chichén Itzá has been once the capital of the mayan empire. Unfortunately the mayan flair is almost completely destroyed by the many tourists and the thousand dealers, selling touristic stuff at Chichén Itzá. You can’t enter any buildings, cause everything is fenced off.
The Pyramid of Kukulcán, the Observatory, the Temple of Warriors, the Temple of the thousand Columns and the huge ball court are the main interesting buildings. After stopping twice, while visiting Chichén Itzá( cause there has been a huge storm), we came back to our accomodation with a lot of mud on our calves. The next day we drove back to our beach hotel for the following week. On the way back we did a short break on a cenote. We enjoyed the all-inclusive package at the hotel and relaxed most of the time. We just did another short trip to a lagoon(“Yal Ku”) nearby.

Im Oktober sind wir für gute 2 Wochen auf die Halbinsel Yucatan, nach Mexiko gereist. Nach einer ersten Nacht an der Riviera Maya, haben wir am nächsten Morgen unseren Mietwagen abgeholt und sind zugleich ins benachbarte Tulum gefahren. Die Mayastätte in Tulum ist die einzige, welche direkt am Meer liegt. Die Architektur und das Mystische mit dem karibischen Ozean im Hintergrund hat wirklich etwas einmaliges. Unsere Fahrt ging an der Lagune von Bacalar weiter Richtung Chetumal wo wir übernachteten. Am nächsten Morgen machten wir uns in aller Frühe auf um Kohunlich zu besuchen. Über einen wilden Pfad erreicht man mittem im Dschungel die Mayastätte von Konhunlich. Der Maskentempel ist sehr anschaulich und auch die Tierwelt( eine 3-4m lange Schlange begrüsste uns und wies uns auf die vielen Tukane hin) ist sehr beeindruckend. Die nächsten Tempel besuchten wir in Xpujil( 3 imposante Türme nebeneinander), wo wir von einer Regenschauer gewaltig nass wurden. Nach einer Dusche in einer Dschungellodge besuchten wir am späten Nachmittag noch Chicanna(relativ klein) und Becan. Becan, welches von einem hohen Graben umgeben ist, war das religiöse und politische Handelszentrum. Die Pyramiden und Gebäude sind lohnenenswert anzusehen und von der großen pyramide hat man einen fantastischen Ausblick über den Dschungel. Durch die Einsamkeit(wenig besucht) fühlt man sich wie in eine andere Welt+Zeit zurückversetzt. Den nächsten Tag besuchten wir Calakmul und das gleichbenamte Biosphärenreservat. Calakmul war einst zusammen mit Tikal in Guatemala das bedeutenste und maechtigste Maya-Machtzentrum und befindet sich auf einer Fläche von ca. 30qkm mit mehr als 6000 Bauten. In Calakmul befindet sich mit 53m die hoechste Maya-Pyramide Mexicos und nach Tikal die zweithoechste der Maya-Welt ueberhaupt. Ein fantastische Ausblick, der die Mühen des Aufstieges belohnen. Neben 2 verschiedenen Brühlaffenarten, haben wir Schildkröten, Tukane, Schlangen, Tapire und riesige Vogelspinnen entdeckt. Sehr schöne Natur, welche nur durch Millionen von Mücken getrübt wird. Über die 30km Holperstrasse ging es zurück auf die Bundesstrasse und wir setzten unseren Weg nach Chetumal fort.
Am nächsten Morgen besuchten wir kurz die Stadt und machten uns auf den Weg um Labná zu besuchen. Labná befindet sich auf der sogenannten Puuc-Route, d.h. entlang dieser Route befindet man viele Mayastätten die allesamt in diesem Stil gebaut worden sind. Nach Labná mit dem beeindruckendem “Gran Palacio” und dem “Arco Triunfal” fuhren wir nach Kabah. Der Palast der Masken, deren Mauern von 260 Chaac-Masken verzeirt sind ist allemal ein besuch wert. Später ging es zu unser Unterkunft in Uxmal. Nach der mehr oder weniger gelungen Licht- und Tonshow besuchten wir am nächsten Tag diese riesige Ruinenstadt. Die “Pyramide des Magiers” ist das beeindruckendste Gebäude und es dreht sich alles um diese. Das mächtigste Gebäude ist der Gouverneurspalast. Nach Uxmal fuhren wir nach Merida, dessen spanisch-mexikanischem Flair wir am Abend erlegen waren. Der nächste Tag führte uns über das kleine Örtche Izamal nach Chichén Itzá. In Izamal besuchten wir das Franziskanerkloster, welche wie die Altstadt in gelb-weißem Gewand auftritt. Nach dem Besuch der Kinich Kakmo Pyramide fuhren wir nach Chichén Itzá. Leider ist die ehemals Hauptstadt eines Maya-Reiches durch den Tourismus schon sehr in Mitleidenschaft gezogen wurden. Jegliche Gebäude sind abgesperrt und diverse Händler verkaufen touristische Sachen zwischen den Gebäuden. Ein richtiger Maya-Flair kann da nicht auftauchen. Die Tempelstadt mit etwa einem Kilometer Durchmesser bietet neben der Pyramide des Kukulcán noch weitere beeinruckende Gebäude. Der Schneckenturm( das Observatorium), der Kriegertempel, der Tempel der tausend Säulen sowie der riesige Ballspielplatz lassen einen wenigstens etwas von der imposanten Mayakultur vorstellen. Ein wahnsinniger Regen lies uns mehrmals für mehrere halbe Stunden pausieren. Mit mächtig Schlamm an den Waden sind wir dann wieder in unsere Unterkungt gelandet. Nach einem Abstecher zu einer unterirdischen Centote sind wir am nächsten Tag gegen Mittag in unserem Hotel wieder angekommen. Dort liesen wir uns knapp 1 Woche komplett verwöhnen. Einen kleine Ausflug machten wir noch zur “Yal Ku” Lagune, und schnorchelten zwischen lauter bunten Fischen, ansonsten war relaxen und Cocktail trinken angesagt.
